Southpaws 2024 Internship

Our internships have been the launchpad for numerous residency and specialist pathways and we currently have some of the largest internship surgical residency programs in Australia.

The Rotating Internship is not only the opportunity to gain valuable insight, experience, knowledge and new skills as a clinician, but it can also be an essential first step on a journey to specialisation.

Each year, rotating interns with a passion for surgery are selected through an application process to join our Surgical Internship. The surgical internship is a gateway to Surgical Residency applications both at Southpaws and internationally. There are currently 2 new opportunities every year.

Southpaws aim to be the first choice for expert veterinary care across Melbourne and our network and teams of experts are growing.

We offer referral services in Surgery, Critical Care and Oncology (Medical and Surgical) as well as expertise in Diagnostic Imaging.

The Role

Whether you have experience in general practice or not, rotating internships are designed to give you exposure to a veterinary referral environment, develop your skills and knowledge, and gain exposure to the different specialisations that you may want to pursue at the end of the program.

The Detail 

Southpaws are home to an internationally renowned Surgical department with the busiest and most diverse caseload in Melbourne. Our surgical department is recognised not only for its capabilities in theatre but for its contribution to training and education both domestically and around the world. We perform a wide range of specialist soft tissue, neurologic, oncologic, and orthopaedic surgeries. Some of the advanced procedures performed include Total Hip Replacement and joint resurfacing, laparoscopic surgery, fluoroscopy-assisted fracture repair and transvenous coil embolisation for Porto-systemic shunts.

Southpaws is a leader in Surgical Oncology and the service is completed by our Medical Oncology team including a European Diplomate trained clinician. We have an independent chemotherapy ward with contactless apparatus and an Orthovoltage Radiotherapy unit for treating a range of neoplasia.
