Specialist Veterinary Hospital - Southpaws

One of Australia’s premier veterinary specialist surgery, cancer care and imaging facilities, Southpaws Melbourne, provides the best surgical and cancer care for dogs and cats by referral from your primary care vet. At Southpaws, our staff will care for your pet with as much love as you do.

We offer free surgical consultations by referred appointment at two locations - our Camberwell Consulting Suites and our Moorabbin Surgical Hospital. Surgery takes place at our Moorabbin Hospital. Our Camberwell consulting suites are conveniently located close to major freeways. Patients admitted at Camberwell are transported by our staff in our custom fitted van, free of charge to our Moorabbin hospital and then returned to Camberwell for discharge.

Southpaws hospital boasts the only radiation therapy unit for animals in Victoria and was the first deep-therapy radiation unit for dogs and cats in Australia. Our CT scanner is one of the fastest in Australia and gives the best image quality and shorter anaesthetic times.

Computed Tomography (CT)

The Toshiba Aquilion Advance16 slice helical CT scanner at Southpaws allows for advanced imaging of all dog and cat body structures using either axial or helical imaging technologies. The scanner is used for imaging of spinal lesions, tumours in all parts of the body, brain scans and bone scans, as well as a large range of less common investigations.

Scan times are the fastest in Australia, with the actual scan taking only 3-5 seconds in many instances. All pets are placed under a fully monitored general anaesthetic during the scan.

Radiotherapy Suite

The radiation therapy facility at Southpaws is the only radiation therapy unit for animals in Victoria and was the first deep-therapy unit for animals in Australia. The radiation suite contains a Therapax 300kV deep therapy machine - one of only two veterinary machines in Australia.

All treatments take place under Dr Charles Kuntz's direction. Charles has extensive experience with radiation oncology internationally. The facility is monitored with closed circuit video and portable patient monitors - the same level of patient monitoring as is received by all patients undergoing anaesthesia.

Veterinary Radiation Therapy At Southpaws

Computed Radiography

Southpaws computed radiography improves image quality, reduces the need for retakes and minimises your pet's exposure to radiation.

Southpaws has a human quality Mobile Xray Unit and a Kodak Point-of-Care CR 140 digital Xray system, which enables us to capture high-quality Xray images of any body part. Our technology ensures that digital images can be enhanced, enlarged and duplicated and can be transferred by file sharing. We often take Xrays on the floor to improve patient comfort and reduce the need for unnecessary sedation.
