Specialist Vet Services at Southpaws

Southpaws is one of Australia’s best veterinary referral hospitals with the highest level care in a professional and comforting environment for pets and owners. Our caring staff provide the very best in surgical, medical and cancer care for dogs and cats.

We have some of the most advanced veterinary imaging and radiography capabilities in Australia. Our CT scanner is one of the fastest in Australia with increased image quality and shorter anaesthetic times. We also have the only radiation therapy unit treating cancer in dogs and cats, in Victoria. You can visit us at two convenient locations..

General Surgery

Southpaws is headed by Dr. Charles Kuntz and Dr James Simcock, both surgeons are Registered Specialists of Small Animal Surgery and Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Our team's experience and qualifications make us experts in soft-tissue surgery and we routinely perform cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and urinary tract surgery with very high rates of success.

Orthopaedic Surgery Including TPLO

We offer a full range of preventative and therapeutic orthopaedic surgery for canine cruciate disease (such as Tibia-Plateau-Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO)), elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, shoulder lameness, fracture repair, orthopaedic cancer and joint replacement.

At Southpaws we get the best orthopaedic results after surgery by working closely with Dogs In Motion physiotherapists, also located on our campus.

We offer stem cell therapy to help relieve the pain and discomfort caused by canine osteoarthritis. This can dramatically improve quality of life and reduce the need for potentially harmful anti-inflammatory medications.

Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery requires patience, experience and outstanding technical skill. Our specialist surgeons have performed over 1,000 spinal surgeries with significant rates of success. Tango, a Hungarian Vizsler puppy was unable to walk after a dog attack. After CT scans, the vertabrae were modelled using our 3D printer to create an exact plastic model of the surgical site. The model showed 30% compression of the affected vertabrae and the presence of fragments. Surgery proceeded sucessfully and Tango is now running, walking and jumping - pain free.

Brain surgery is also commonplace at Southpaws. We routinely and successfully remove brain tumours. Southpaws skills and techniques in neurosurgery are at the leading edge of world’s best practice in veterinary medicine.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Our surgeons perform minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery for many abdominal procedures. Minimally invasive surgery means smaller surgical site wounds, shorter recovery times and less pain. Our team has published on new techniques for minimally invasive surgery in animals.

Postoperative Care

Postoperative care is critical to surgical success and comfort of patients. Pets can't tell us they are in pain, so we provide significant pain relief after surgery including by injections, oral tablets, drips and innovative narcotic patches applied to the skin. Patients are discharged with anti-inflammatories as well.

Patient warming is critical during and after surgery - increasing comfort and improving wound healing and anaesthetic recovery, while decreasing pain and infection. We use an electrically heated surgery table, pre-warmed fluids and forced warm air beds during recovery.

Nursing care is one of the most important factors for comfortable and successful recovery. Southpaws has one of the highest nurse-patient ratios in the industry. Our nurses are highly skilled and compassionate. We have 24 / 7 / 365 veterinary and nursing care on-site. Because we don’t routinely see emergency patients, our overnight staff are dedicated to in-patient care.
